Here’s an Oldie

Just to show you how I used to draw way back when I was a teen,( that was the 70′s by the way), here is a picture I made to hang up on my wall at Christmastime.  I would have taped this to my wall in the kitchen for all to see until the next holiday, when there would be a new picture.  This picture is of my younger brother holding my bunny piggy bank, but it looks real in the picture, right?  I still remember him posing for me. And yes, it is rendered in beautiful crayon, as usual.  I had no idea about colored pencils at this stage.  It was a beginning. I can’t believe I still have this. :)

The Amish

To know me is to know I love anything to do with the Amish.  For more than 10 years my family has traveled to Lancaster, Pa and stayed for 6 days at a time… never wanting to leave.  It is peaceful and serene. The countryside…breathtaking.  I always thought I wanted to move to the country when I got older.  But country in RI is to be in the middle of nowhere and placed in the middle of hills and tall pine trees.  You cannot see the horizon as you can in PA.  There are a couple of main roads with traffic and lights, but you can take a side road, and  suddenly you are in the middle of paradise.

Every time we go there, we take a side road and travel up a distance until we are in the middle of never-ending farms.  We shut off the car, and you hear nothing!  Look up ! There are no wires over your head.  It’s so quiet, you can hear the rustling of the grass and  towering cornstalks.  The many meadow butterflies flit close to the ground, and  in the fields, there are cows grazing at every turn.  It’s beautiful.

What adds to the already peaceful and serene setting are the Amish people who ride back and forth in their black and grey buggies. They are pulled by sleek, brown horses.  The sound of their trotting is like music to me, and I open a window as we pass just to listen. The Amish people are friendly, but quiet.  The women wear bright dresses and heart-shaped bonnets and often go barefoot on hot summer days.  The men seem to never sweat in their heavy, black pants and straw hats.  You have to experience this to completely understand the feeling you have when you are there, and somehow,  you will never want to leave.

The experience always makes me feel refreshed, and lets me feel I can go on for the rest of the year, until I go back again. As long as I can go back!

Well, it’s been about 6 years since we have gone last, and now even the kids miss it.  We had made close friends with an Amish family there.  They have a quilt shop on their property.  They have  a daughter of Caitlin’s age, and we  have eaten at their home, and  once, they even came out to dinner with us. Kathryn, the amish girl, invited us one year to her school house to meet everyone.  We went (at first hesitated) and realized “we” were the one’s being stared at and whispered about.  But they gave us gifts and asked questions and were so friendly.  I’m so glad we went.  We will never forget the experience.

The amish family was sadly one of the families that were affected by that awful Nickel Mines shooting.  Their grandaughter was the 13 year old Marion Fisher, and all I could do was cry.  I have tried to contact them since then with cards and such, with no response.

We are going to try to go this summer as a family again, before everyone here goes their separate ways with work and college, etc. We want to remember the feeling again.  The calmness and just enjoying nature and each other’s company in a less stressed environment. To be childlike again…and  also, just maybe,  we will still find that Kathryn will still be there.  We can only hope!

Today is 111!

Okay, if you read my previous post, it is about me seeing the number 111 everywhere.  Guess what today is?   It is 1/11!  So, does this mean anything?  I hope I will have a good day.  Maybe something “good” will happen.  We’ll see:)  Cheryl

Another Silhouette

Here is a pic of a silhouette I had done for my sister-in-law for Christmas.  It looks kind of peaceful, doesn’t it.  i told my sister-in-law you could look at it as a vintage picture, a woman reading a book in her long dress (looking out the window) or it could be a picture of me with my hair up and a “snuggie” on!  :)

The number 111-This Is Getting A Little Scary

Okay, now this is getting a little scary.  For almost 5-6 months now I have been seeing the number 111 show up on everything.  I first realized this when I was out in my car.  I would glance down at my digital clock, and suddenly, it always seemed to read 1:11.  Another time, I was so happy that this didn’t happen, when I noticed the license plate of the car in front of me had the number 111 on part of the plate!  Another day, I went to pick up  the kids at school like I always do,  and I’m driving through the back streets to the school.  I look to my left at a random house ,and  there right on the overhang of the front door-111!!!  Okay, now this was getting too creepy.

Then there as the time the powerball jackpot was 111 million.  I just had to play-but nothing!   Unfortunately,  I guess 111 doesn’t mean I’ll win powerball.   Again, I played the Wii with my sister -in- law the other night and we were bowling.  My score board read 111-I freaked!  About a couple of weeks ago,I went looking through my pictures of long ago trips to Lancaster County, PA.  Ahhh, I was just enjoying the beauty and reminiscing, when I came to an old picture of my husband  coming out of a gas station.  The gas price behind his head read $1.11. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Now I’m seeing the number when I’m just relaxing in my living room.  I’ll just happen to look up at the tv screen when the digital clock changes instantly from 1:10 to 1:11, as I’m staring at it!  It’s even freakier when I see 11:11!!  One time, I was driving down the road toward home and looked at the clock in my van and saw 1:14 and after I let out a sigh of relief, I look up and there on the digital clock on the liquor store, in bright red numbers-1:11!  My clock was off!!!

What does this mean for me?  Of course I had to look this up, hoping it was “good” news. I guess other people have had this happen to them, too.  They say it has to do with a “higher purpose”, angels and the like.  Actually, I just realized there are more articles out there I didn’t see before, so I’m going to have to read these.  Let me know if any of you reading this has had a similar experience.  I am just hoping it doesn’t mean something bad is going to happen to me on January 11th, or November 1st.

I’ll let you know if I see this number in the future.  Very interesting!  Good…I just looked at my word count and it’s 415…and the time…2:02.  Whew!!! So far I’m safe. Take care.  Cheryl
